Storm Architectural Design

Storm Architectural Design is a newly established Scottish studio focused on clear, practical, and sustainable early-stage design. Founded by Thomas Franzén Storm, the practice blends Scandinavian simplicity with the character of the Scottish landscape, helping homeowners, self-builders, and small developers turn ideas into confident planning-ready drawings.

Alongside architectural design, the studio offers Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) calculations for clients who want to understand and reduce the environmental impact of their project. LCA is quickly becoming a key part of the construction process:

  • All buildings over 1,000 m² or comprising more than 10 dwellings will require an LCA by early 2028

  • All new construction will require an LCA by 2030

By integrating sustainable thinking early—through layout, material choices, and passive design principles—we help create homes and buildings that are efficient, future-proof, and ready for these upcoming standards.

Storm Architectural Design is committed to thoughtful design, natural materials, and a smoother, clearer journey from concept to approval.

Professional Description

Thomas Franzén Storm is a sustainability-focused Architectural Technologist with advanced academic training and hands-on industry experience across residential design, timber-frame construction, and lifecycle-based environmental assessment.

He holds a Master of Science in Advanced Architectural Design from Robert Gordon University (UK), where his research specialised in whole-building Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), comparing Scottish-grown cross-laminated timber with European CLT, concrete, and steel baseline systems. His work demonstrates a strong evidence-based approach to material selection, carbon reduction, and performance-led design.

Thomas also holds a Bachelor of Science in Sustainable Design from Aalborg University (Denmark). This programme emphasised systems thinking, environmental assessment methodologies, and sustainable product and building design, including extensive use of LCA tools such as SimaPro. The degree provided a multidisciplinary foundation combining environmental science, design strategy, and quantitative sustainability evaluation.

Professionally, Thomas has worked as a Technical Sales Advisor in the timber-frame construction sector, acting as the primary technical and client-facing contact throughout the design and delivery process. His role involved developing 2D and 3D architectural drawings, coordinating planning-compliant designs, advising on build systems, and managing projects from initial enquiry through to final agreement. This experience has given him a strong practical understanding of buildability, regulatory requirements, and client communication.

He is a Certified Passive House Tradesperson, with applied knowledge of on-site delivery and coordination in line with the Passive House Standard, and holds One Click LCA certification, complemented by advanced LCA training and recent certification in the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD). Together, these qualifications position him at the intersection of architectural technology, sustainability compliance, and low-carbon design strategy.

Thomas is technically proficient in AutoCAD 2D, with working knowledge of Revit 3D, and digital fabrication workflows. He is recognised for his clear communication style, solution-oriented mindset, and ability to bridge technical detail with client understanding—making him particularly effective in early-stage design, sustainability reporting, and performance-driven decision-making.
